ikebana lesson 07/18/2008

(1) Donna, Curve and straight lines.

People often think that there're no shin, soe, and hikae in a free style arrangement. It's not true. Shin, soe, and hikae always exist in an arrangement, except not so obvious. Remember: Shin gives the character of the arrangement--upright, slanting, horizontal, or hanging; Soe gives the depth or defines the space of the arrangement; Hikae often reveal the focal point of the arrangement. In this case, curve lines form the shin, straight lines are soe, Sun flower is the hikae.
